The name of 'Calaf' is from the famous Italian opera play 'Turandot' composed by Giacomo Puccini in 1920's. The story of Turandot is based on Persian story book 'One Thousand and One Days'. Calaf is the name of the main character - the Persian prince.

6moons.com reviewer Wayne Zufall says :" I enjoyed this amplifier. It is musically well balanced and does not suffer a single large fault that would require compensation elsewhere. You can listen to CD after CD without getting fatigued. This integrated can realistically drive most speakers and provides a high level of quality sound reproduction without breaking the bank. A lot of people will like it simply because it is easy to set up and use." Full review link is here

Reviewer Ian Harris from UK's Hi-Fi News said "Calaf amp that is the star here. Apart from a slight warmth in the bass, it is highly transparent, and in terms of grip per pound is a premier league performer." Full Review link is here

Description:

This is a massive looking and great sounding amp. For North American kids who do not know much about China, they refer the front dotted pattern as 'neat Legos' (as mentioned in the 6moons review'). In fact, this special pattern is modeled after the Imperial Palace entrance door in Beijing - the palace is also known as 'Forbidden City', which has been the residence of Chinese emperors for hundreds of years.

The Calaf is of a true dual mono design. There is very little headroom available beyond dynamic conditions under for the Calaf. Massive toroidal transformer with independent secondary windings and a bank of eight 10,000uF electrolytic reservoir capacitors for each channel's main power supply. There are also independent preamplifier sections for each cannel and both of these have their own power supplies. Both left and right channels are built as mono power amplifiers, each with seven pairs of high-current transistors mounted onto a thick copper bus bar. This is bolted onto the extruded heat sink that's visible on either side of the amplifier.

Combined with the advantage of class AB and the class A technology, the Cool Class A technology actually achieved the same linear sound performance but without the normal need of a big electrical current, as Class A does and do not produce massive amount of heat. The first 40 watts of the Calaf is pure Class A.
